Hulu app to be discontinued post Disney+ transition: leaked document
Disney+ has been making some big moves with its integration of Hulu, and leaked documents reveal some interesting plans. A leaked internal document called ‘Project Gemini’ outlines Disney’s strategy to fold Hulu’s content and features into Disney+ before eventually shutting down the Hulu app.
According to the document, once all users have transitioned to Disney+, the Hulu app will be decommissioned. While Disney officially states that there are no current plans to sunset the Hulu app, the internal document paints a different picture.
Three high-ranking Disney tech employees have mentioned that resources are being diverted away from Hulu, indicating a lack of active development. One employee described Hulu as being on life support, with no major new features in the works.
Disney seems to be aiming for a more seamless integration between Hulu and Disney+, possibly setting the stage for larger “super app” endeavors. While Disney doesn’t appear to be planning to force Hulu users onto Disney+ anytime soon, there is an effort to entice users organically by delivering a superior experience on Disney+.
It’s likely that the Hulu app will gradually decline due to a lack of investment, while Disney+ continues to improve. Eventually, this could lead to a natural migration of users from Hulu to Disney+ and the discontinuation of Hulu altogether.
