Disney’s Project Gemini aims to phase out Hulu app
The Walt Disney Company is making moves to transition Hulu users to Disney Plus as part of an internal plan known as Project Gemini. The goal is to eventually shut down the standalone Hulu app and streamline their streaming operations. This effort reflects Disney’s focus on optimizing technology and reducing redundancies across its streaming platforms.
Staffers at Disney overseeing the streaming platforms are working to encourage subscribers to switch from the standalone Hulu app to Disney Plus, where more mature content is available. While there is no set date for the closure of Hulu, a strategy called Project Gemini has been organized for this purpose.
Hulu subscribers who opt for the Disney Plus bundle already have access to Hulu shows and movies through both apps, with Disney Plus even launching a dedicated Hulu tile last year. Former Disney CEO Bob Iger has long expressed a desire to move more Hulu customers to Disney Plus in order to streamline the company’s direct-to-consumer operations.
After acquiring Comcast’s share in Hulu, Disney has reorganized its streaming business units to focus more on Disney Plus. Some staffers who previously supported the Hulu app have now transitioned to working on Disney Plus.
While Disney has stated that there are no immediate plans to shut down the Hulu app, there are signs that they are looking to transition more Hulu subscribers to Disney Plus. The company recently launched a feature that allows subscribers to sync their watch lists between the two apps and unlock select Hulu content for Disney Plus subscribers.
Executives are also aiming to eliminate redundancies between Hulu and Disney Plus by utilizing a single technology platform for both services, streamlining the user experience. This effort is part of Disney’s larger strategy to optimize their streaming offerings and provide a seamless viewing experience for subscribers.
