Cursed Shark Thriller: Review and Analysis of Thrash on Netflix

Shark thriller Beneath the Storm had quite the journey before landing on Netflix as Thrash. Originally set for a theatrical release by Sony in 2024, the film was later renamed Shiver and slated for August the following year. Now in 2026, it’s on Netflix with a new name. While this may not seem like the most promising start for a film, sometimes movies find second lives on streaming platforms.

In the case of Thrash, the movie has a bit of a mixed reception. Directed by Tommy Wirkola, known for his quirky and offbeat films, the movie combines a disaster thriller with shark attacks during a hurricane. It’s a premise we’ve seen before in films like Crawl, but unfortunately, Thrash fails to make a splash. The film lacks the tension and scares needed to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. With a mix of accents and a distracting sense of inauthenticity, the film struggles to find its footing.

Starring Phoebe Dynevor from Bridgerton and Djimon Hounsou, the movie follows their characters as they navigate the chaos of the shark-infested flood. Unfortunately, the characters feel flat and the ensemble approach takes away from any potential tension that could have been built. The numerous shark sightings and lackluster action sequences make the sharks themselves less menacing than they should be.
