Lessons in Alternate History Continue with ‘For All Mankind’ Season 5 on Mars

With each season of Apple TV’s “For All Mankind,” viewers are taken on a journey through an alternate history that is both captivating and familiar. Set in a reality where the space race took a different turn, the show imagines a world where lunar travel became commonplace years ago.

During a recent panel at WonderCon 2026, co-creators and executive producers Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert shared their insights into the show’s fifth season, which premiered on March 27. For them, the series serves as a fascinating reflection of our own history and what might have been.

One of the key themes of this season is the tension between Earth and Mars, as the once-thriving Happy Valley colony faces new challenges. Drawing inspiration from real historical events, the show explores issues of colonialism, power struggles, and economic exploitation in a futuristic setting.

What sets “For All Mankind” apart is its unique approach to storytelling. Each season takes place about a decade after the previous one, leading to a fresh cast of characters and new perspectives. Actress Coral Peña, who plays Aleida Rosales, shared her experience of aging her character through prosthetics over the course of the series. She found humor in her character’s journey, especially when her character joins the crew on Mars.

Joining the cast as Alex Baldwin, Sean Kaufman reflected on the legacy of the show and his role as the grandson of a seasoned astronaut. Despite nerves, he found inspiration in his character’s journey to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps.

Ruby Cruz, who portrays Lily, the daughter of Mars laborer Miles Dale, enjoyed the opportunity to work with such talented actors, including her on-screen father Toby Kebbell. Their on-set dynamic brought humor and joy to her experience.

As the show continues to push boundaries and explore new frontiers, “For All Mankind” remains a testament to the power of storytelling and imagination.
