Sky Content Partnership Driving Strong HBO Max Uptake in UK and Ireland: Ampere Analysis
ovies in the UK and Ireland. Although that exclusive deal has ended, a new partnership was announced in February that combines HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, and Hayu into a single Sky TV subscription. This move has made HBO Max fully integrated into Sky’s streaming service Now.
Ampere Analysis noted that Sky’s longer-term subscription contracts, which typically last around 24 months, help reduce churn for partner services. Additionally, the addition of TNT Sports to HBO Max has attracted more sign-ups, especially with the streaming of major Premier League and Champions League fixtures in early April.
The arrival of HBO Max in the UK and Ireland has made a significant impact on other streaming services, with 12% of new subscribers canceling at least one other service in March before signing up. Disney+ and Prime Video were the most affected by this switch.
Ampere Analysis predicts that HBO Max is on pace to reach their estimate of six million subscribers in the UK by the end of April. Mayssa Jamil, senior analyst at Ampere, mentioned that early adoption of HBO Max has been strong. Most users are adding it to their existing mix of streaming services rather than replacing others. This suggests that HBO Max’s growth is incremental rather than substitutional.
Sky’s bundling strategy has proven successful in stabilizing its customer base in the midst of cord-cutting trends. Their partnership with HBO Max serves as a model for pay-TV operators looking to retain customers in a changing landscape.
