Sarah Michelle Gellar confirms fate of Hulu’s Buffy series “New Sunnydale”

Sarah Michelle Gellar, the iconic star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, recently shared some bittersweet news with fans on social media. Hulu has decided not to move forward with the highly anticipated series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, in which Gellar was set to star and executive produce.

In a heartfelt video on Instagram, Gellar expressed her sadness about the decision, but also thanked the project’s creative team, including director Chloé Zhao, for the opportunity. She humorously reassured fans that if the apocalypse ever comes, they can still beep her.

For those unfamiliar, the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, which ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003, continues to be a beloved classic. The story even continued in comic book form until 2018, keeping the legacy alive for fans.

Since the show ended, there have been talks of other Buffy-related projects, such as a potential Ripper series focusing on Rupert Giles and a potential Spike-focused film. Fans were excited about the announcement of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale in early 2025, set roughly 25 years after the original show’s conclusion.

While this news may be disappointing for fans looking forward to the new series, the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series is still available for streaming on Hulu. So, whether you’re a die-hard fan or just discovering the show, you can still enjoy the timeless adventures of Buffy Summers and the Scooby Gang on the small screen.
