Sarah Michelle Gellar Confirms Buffy: New Sunnydale Revival Cancellation by Hulu
Ready the stakes, refresh your memory on Slayer lingo, and grab some popcorn – because a return to Sunnydale is not on the cards after all. Sarah Michelle Gellar broke the news that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival, known as Buffy: New Sunnydale, has been axed by Hulu.
Gellar shared the disappointing update with fans in a heartfelt Instagram video on March 14, revealing Hulu’s decision to halt the series. She expressed her sadness, emphasizing the news directly to her followers, saying, “I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale.”
The project gained momentum after acclaimed filmmaker Chloé Zhao pitched a fresh concept that persuaded Gellar to consider reprising her iconic role. Zhao had been lined up to direct the pilot and take on an executive producer role, with Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman on board as writers.
The sequel aimed to breathe new life into the Buffy universe by introducing a new crop of vampire hunters. Gellar was slated to return as Buffy Summers, this time in a mentorship role, guiding a young slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
In her reflection on the project, Gellar credited Zhao for reigniting her passion for the character, commenting, “I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots. Thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”
For die-hard fans, the cancellation marks the end of hope for a return to the Buffyverse. Originally airing from 1997-2003, Buffy the Vampire Slayer won hearts and spawned the spinoff series Angel. Gellar concluded her video message with a nod to one of Buffy Summers’ iconic lines, reassuring fans, “I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.”
So, for now, it looks like the Slayer will remain in retirement. But who knows what the future holds for Buffy and the gang? Stay tuned for updates, and in the meantime, keep those stakes sharpened and your paranormal investigations on standby. The Hellmouth may lie dormant, but the legacy of the Chosen One lives on.
