Sarah Michelle Gellar Provides Update on New Buffy the Vampire Slayer Series at Hulu

Sad news, Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans! Sarah Michelle Gellar shared on Instagram that the planned reboot of the beloved series, titled “Buffy: New Sunnydale,” will not be happening on Hulu. In a heartfelt video message, Gellar expressed her disappointment but thanked director Chloé Zhao for the opportunity. She mentioned how much she loves Buffy and how meaningful the show is to both her and fans.

For those who may not be familiar, Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally aired in 1997 and follows Buffy Summers, a “slayer” destined to battle supernatural creatures like vampires. Guided by her watcher, Rupert Giles, and supported by her friends Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris, Buffy’s adventures captured the hearts of viewers until the series ended in 2003.

Reports about the reboot surfaced in February 2025, with Zhao set to direct a script by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. The new series was supposed to focus on a new slayer portrayed by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, with Gellar making appearances as Buffy in a recurring role. Initially hesitant about revisiting the show, Gellar eventually warmed up to the idea after seeing successful reboots of other series.

While the Buffy reboot may not be happening, Gellar assured fans that if the apocalypse ever comes, they can still “beep her.” It’s always disappointing when a beloved show doesn’t come to fruition, but it’s clear that the passion and love for Buffy the Vampire Slayer will always remain strong. Stay tuned for any future updates on this story!
