Sarah Michelle Gellar announces cancellation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot

In some sad news for Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans, Sarah Michelle Gellar has shared that the planned reboot of the beloved 90s series has been cancelled by streaming platform Hulu. The sequel, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, was set to bring back Gellar as Buffy Summers, with Chloé Zhao directing.

Taking to social media to break the news, Gellar expressed her disappointment but thanked Chloe for the opportunity to step back into Buffy’s shoes. The actress reassured fans that this decision doesn’t change her love for the character or the show, ending her message with the iconic line, “I promise, if the apocalypse actually comes, you could still beep me.”

The original series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, followed Buffy as she balanced high school life with her duties as a vampire slayer. Starring alongside Gellar were Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, and Michelle Trachtenberg.

While the Buffy reboot may not be happening now, fans can still revisit the original series for a dose of supernatural drama and kick-butt action. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with the new show, but we’ll always have the memories of Buffy and her friends fighting evil in Sunnydale.
