Hulu App Shutdown: Everything You Need to Know

The end of the road seems to be near for the Hulu app, and here’s the scoop on what’s happening. So, when exactly is the Hulu app going to shut down? Well, what we do know is that The Walt Disney Company, Hulu’s parent company, is planning to shut down the standalone app and merge all of its content with Disney+ at some point this year. But here’s the kicker – Hulu is already vanishing from some platforms. Just this month, Nintendo dropped the bombshell that Hulu won’t be available on the Nintendo Switch come February 5, 2026. Ouch. If you’re an avid Hulu user, don’t fret just yet – the app is still up and running on other platforms for the time being.

Unfortunately, what we don’t know for sure is the exact date when the standalone Hulu app will bid us adieu. The Walt Disney Company hasn’t given us the inside scoop on that yet. We’ve reached out to them for comment, so stay tuned for more details on that.

The backstory behind all of this is quite interesting. In 2023, Disney got hold of a 33% stake in Hulu from Comcast for over $8.6 billion, essentially giving Disney the power grip on the streaming service. Flashback to 2019 when Comcast handed over the reins to Disney, making Disney the head honcho and Comcast a silent partner. Hulu kicked off in 2007, evolving into a platform for TV shows backed by major entertainment companies looking to stay ahead of the internet curve. Disney hopped on board in 2009, aiming to offer ABC, ESPN, and Disney Channel shows. Fast forward a decade later to when Disney snagged the majority control of the cookie jar by acquiring 21st Century Fox.
