Tom Hiddleston’s Bold New Take on Pompeii: Stepping Back in Time

Tom Hiddleston is set to take us on a journey back in time with a bold new perspective on Pompeii. We all know the tragic tale of Mount Vesuvius erupting in A.D. 79, burying the city in ash and preserving its population in time. But a groundbreaking new documentary series is here to show us that there’s more to the story.

National Geographic recently released the official trailer for ‘Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston,’ a three-part docudrama premiering on Disney+ on July 23. If the title sounds a bit cosmic, that’s intentional. The series brings together Tom Hiddleston, known for playing Loki in the Marvel universe, and Loki executive producer Kevin R. Wright to reshape our understanding of ancient history.

Instead of portraying Pompeii as a static disaster site, this docudrama reframes it as a minute-by-minute human drama. Led by a team of archaeologists, geologists, and disaster experts, Hiddleston acts as a historical detective in a blend of scientific investigation and cinematic storytelling.

The series delves into the lives of three real Romans who faced the eruption of Vesuvius: a teenage apprentice, a powerful businesswoman, and a mysterious Praetorian Guard. As the disaster approaches, we witness the split-second choices they had to make.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the series is that it challenges the idea that everyone in Pompeii was doomed. Many had a real chance of survival during the catastrophe, shifting the narrative from hopelessness to stories of human resilience and choice.

In addition to the TV show, National Geographic will release a feature on July 21 that explores how modern technology is transforming Roman archaeology. Artificial intelligence, DNA analysis, and other cutting-edge tools are revealing new insights into Roman society, including health, social dynamics, and daily life.

The series aims to create a new genre of historical programming, with a unique score by composer Aisling Brouwer and Plimsoll Productions at the helm. ‘Pompeii: Out of Time with Tom Hiddleston’ will premiere on the National Geographic channel on July 22, followed by a global release on Disney+ and Hulu on July 23, 2026.

For history enthusiasts who enjoy a mix of cinematic storytelling and scientific discovery, this series promises to deliver a fresh take on the ancient world.
