New Disney CEO Plans ‘Super App’ for Theme Park Tickets, Movies, and More
Walt Disney Co executives are busy brainstorming ways to bring all of the company’s mobile apps together to create a seamless experience for Disney fans. The goal is to transform their streaming service into a one-stop destination where users can not only watch movies but also book park tickets, shop for merchandise, play games, and more, according to insiders familiar with the discussions.
The new CEO of Disney, Josh D’Amaro, is working to break down barriers within the company and make it easier for customers to engage with the Disney brand. Plans are in the works to combine Disney+ with other mobile platforms like the Disneyland Resort and Disney Cruise Line Navigator apps to create what is being referred to internally as a “super app”.
While these conversations are still in the early stages and no concrete steps have been taken, the idea has been a key focus in internal presentations and demonstrates the potential D’Amaro sees in expanding the company’s direct-to-consumer business.
Disney has long entertained the idea of a super app or membership program similar to Amazon Prime, with previous CEO Bob Iger considering it for years. However, logistical challenges have prevented the company from moving forward with the concept until now.
D’Amaro, who took over as CEO in March, is enthusiastic about the possibilities. He has hinted at Disney+ evolving into more than just a streaming service, envisioning it as a digital hub that brings together Disney’s stories, experiences, games, films, and more in new and exciting ways.
As part of his efforts to integrate games and entertainment more closely, D’Amaro has restructured Disney and also explored investments in user-generated content and artificial intelligence. Unfortunately, a recent setback occurred when OpenAI Inc. shut down its Sora text-to-video generator, impacting a major deal Disney had in place to enhance user experiences on Disney+.
Despite this setback, Disney is gearing up to report its first quarterly earnings under D’Amaro’s leadership on May 6. Stay tuned for more updates on Disney’s exciting developments in the world of streaming entertainment.
