Sarah Michelle Gellar: Hulu Executive Removes Buffy Reboot
Sarah Michelle Gellar recently revealed that the revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was axed by a Hulu executive, throwing a stake into her plans. Gellar, who was working on the project with director Chloé Zhao, found out about the cancellation right before a big event where she was set to speak. The reboot, which had shot a pilot, was supposed to follow an older Buffy and a new slayer, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. According to Gellar, an executive at Hulu who had never even watched the original series was the main obstacle in moving the project forward.
The news came at an unfortunate time, coinciding with Gellar’s return to the big screen and Zhao’s success at the Oscars for her film “Hamnet.” Despite the disappointment, Gellar is grateful for the outpouring of support from fans and former cast members. While the project cannot be picked up by another network due to Disney owning the rights, there is still a possibility that Hulu may revisit the idea in the future.
Despite this setback, Gellar remains positive, emphasizing the timeless legacy of the original series. Zhao echoed similar sentiments, expressing that everything happens for a reason and they are open to the possibilities that may lie ahead. Although the revival may have been staked for now, both Gellar and Zhao are hopeful for what the future may bring.
