Hulu cancels Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot

Sarah Michelle Gellar recently shared some disappointing news for Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans—the planned reboot of the iconic series, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, has been cancelled by Hulu. Gellar broke the news in an Instagram video, expressing her sadness at the decision while also thanking director Chloé Zhao for reminding her how much she loves the character of Buffy.

The reboot was initially announced in February 2025, with Zhao attached to direct a script by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. The new series was set to introduce Ryan Kiera Armstrong as a new slayer, with Gellar making appearances in a recurring role.

Although it’s always tough for fans to hear about cancellations, it’s important to remember that these decisions are made for various reasons behind the scenes. While the Buffy reboot won’t be moving forward, we can still enjoy the original series and appreciate the legacy it has left in the world of television.
