MUAH Awards: Frankenstein and One Battle After

Frankenstein, One Battle After Another, and Sinners came out on top at the 13th Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (MUAHS, IATSE Local 706) Awards. The talented winners were revealed last night during the annual ceremony held at the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles, which was hosted by Rachael Harris.

Sinners snagged the top spot for Best Period and/or Character Makeup and Hair Styling, while One Battle After Another clinched the prize for Contemporary Make-Up and Hair Styling. Frankenstein took home the award for Best Special Make-Up Prosthetics.

Excitingly, both Sinners and Frankenstein are also nominated for Makeup and Hairstyling Oscars this year, competing against Japan’s kabuki drama Kokuho, The Smashing Machine starring Dwayne Johnson, and The Ugly Stepsister, a Cinderella body horror film.

On the television front, NBC’s Saturday Night Live led with three wins, with one of the wins being for its 50th Anniversary Special. Apple TV’s The Studio and Palm Royale each won two awards, with each series securing individual wins for contemporary and period make-up and hair styling.

Disney+’s Skeleton Crew was another double winner, taking home awards in the Children and Teen Programming categories.

In the TV nominations, Stranger Things and Dancing with the Stars led the pack with four nods each. Additionally, the makeup in Ariana Grande’s “eternal sunshine” and Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra” music videos received well-deserved recognition.

Esteemed makeup artist Greg Nelson, known for his work on Raging Bull and Michael Jackson’s Thriller, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Make-Up. Judy Alexander Cory, the talented hairstylist behind Forrest Gump and The Matrix, received the Lifetime Achievement Award for Hair Stylists.

Special honors went to Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning makeup artist Greg Nelson and Oscar-nominated hair stylist Judy Alexander Cory, who both received Lifetime Achievement Awards. The prestigious Vanguard Award was presented to Emmy-nominated makeup artist Michael Johnston. Amy Madigan was honored with this year’s Distinguished Artisan Award by her Weapons director Zach Cregger and the film’s hair and makeup teams.

Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra” music video took home the award for Best Makeup in a Music Video.
