Next Disney+ Show Sets MCU History with Director of 2026 Spider-Man 4

Marvel Studios’ next Disney+ show, Wonder Man, is set to make history in the MCU with director Destin Daniel Cretton at the helm. Cretton, known for his work on “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” is confirmed to direct two episodes of the upcoming series.

Even though there hasn’t been a solo sequel or return from the character, Shang-Chi has been a standout addition to the MCU. Fans credit much of this success to director Destin Daniel Cretton’s stellar work on the film. His talent earned him a deal with Disney and Marvel Studios, initially set for a Shang-Chi sequel and other Disney+ projects. However, he shifted gears to direct “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” before transitioning to “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”

Disney has officially announced that Destin Daniel Cretton will direct the first two episodes of “Wonder Man,” the superhero Hollywood satire comedy show that he co-created with Andrew Guest. Due to a delay, the full season of “Wonder Man” is now set to debut on Disney+ on January 27, 2026. This marks Cretton as the first director to helm episodes of an MCU streaming series and a big-screen movie in the same year with “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”

While Cretton is paving the way as the first Marvel Studios director to helm both a movie and a Disney+ series in the same year, there are other MCU filmmakers who have also made the transition. For example, before taking on the role of DC Studios’ CEO, James Gunn directed “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” for Disney+.

As for the future of Destin Daniel Cretton in the MCU, much of it depends on the reception of his upcoming projects. Reports indicate that “Shang-Chi 2” is still in the works and could be his next undertaking. Cretton is already set to be the director for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and could potentially continue with the trilogy if all goes well.

Early reviews for “Wonder Man” have been positive, leaving the door open for a second season if viewership remains strong. Marvel Studios sees great potential in Cretton and could involve him in various blockbuster projects in the future. While his ties to the MCU are strong, Cretton has also been attached to direct a live-action adaptation of “Naruto.”

Exciting developments lie ahead for Marvel fans, so be sure to stay updated on all the latest MCU news.
