The Testaments: First Look at Agnes and Shift to Next Generation in Gilead

Hulu has delighted fans by revealing the first official images from The Testaments, the highly anticipated spinoff of The Handmaid’s Tale. These images offer a sneak peek into the next generation of Gilead, featuring June Osborne’s daughter, Agnes, in a striking purple outfit as she attends “Wives School.” The photos also introduce new characters played by Chase Infiniti, Rowan Blanchard, Mattea Conforti, Isolde Ardies, and Birva Pandya, all clad in coordinated lilac attire that hints at Gilead’s strict social hierarchy. Fans will be excited to see Ann Dowd reprising her role as Aunt Lydia in the upcoming series.

The spinoff is scheduled to premiere in April 2026, promising viewers a compelling and empowering coming-of-age story. Based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel, The Testaments is set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, offering perspectives from Aunt Lydia, Agnes, and Daisy (later revealed to be Baby Nichole, June’s other daughter). The narrative follows these young women as they evolve into “Pearl Girls,” on a mission to gather incriminating evidence against Gilead’s leaders.

Yahlin Chang, the showrunner, has shared that The Testaments will build on unresolved plotlines from the original series, with the sixth-season finale deliberately leaving space for the spinoff to delve deeper into these narratives. The cast of the new series will see some changes, with Samira Wiley stating that she does not anticipate returning as Moira, feeling ready to move on from her character’s emotionally intense journey. However, O-T Fagbenle and Sam Jaeger have expressed willingness to make cameo appearances if called upon.

Atwood has used the sequel novel to explore the collapse of authoritarian regimes from within, focusing on Gilead’s downfall, a concept she felt was not fully explored in the original story. The Testaments is expected to premiere on Hulu in April 2026, promising a visual and thematic continuation of The Handmaid’s Tale while shifting its focus to a new generation raised within the oppressive society of Gilead.
