Acolyte Creator Discusses Star Wars Show Cancellation
A year after The Acolyte was taken off the air, creator Leslye Headland shared insights into the show’s short-lived journey in the Star Wars universe.
In a recent interview with The Wrap, Headland opened up about the decision behind pulling the plug on The Acolyte after just one season on Disney+. Acknowledging that both viewership and creative considerations played a role in the cancellation, Headland expressed that she wasn’t taken aback by the outcome. What did surprise her was the rapidity and transparency of the decision-making process. She noted, “Once I started receiving feedback on the reactions, criticisms, and viewership numbers, it became clear where things were headed.”
Reports suggest that The Acolyte managed to garner significant attention on Disney+ in 2024, ranking as the platform’s second most-watched show at the time. However, interest waned following the first two episodes, paving the way for the eventual cancellation.
Set against the backdrop of the High Republic era, The Acolyte weaves a tale of a former Padawan teaming up with her Jedi Master to unravel a series of mysteries. The ensemble cast includes Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Dafne Keen, Jodie Turner-Smith, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Manny Jacinto.
Despite facing backlash and unjust criticisms, especially on audience review platforms, Headland maintains her admiration for the vast Star Wars universe. “I stand by my show and my love for Star Wars hasn’t wavered,” she shared. “The experience was incredible, and I have no regrets.”
For those who missed it during its brief stint, Disney+ offers the chance to stream The Acolyte and experience the Star Wars universe like never before.
