Disney+ Viewers Experience Reduction in Premium HDR Formats on 4K Streams
Disney+ users in Europe are noticing a change in their viewing experience, with reports of a decline in picture quality after Dolby Vision and other advanced features disappeared from the platform. The problem initially popped up in Germany before spreading to other European countries. Subscribers who were used to watching content in Dolby Vision suddenly found themselves limited to standard HDR10, even though they were paying for a premium service.
In December 2025, outlets like 4KFilme in Germany started reporting that Dolby Vision was no longer an option for Disney+ viewers. It turns out; this change might be linked to a legal battle. A court in Germany ruled in favor of a US-based tech company, InterDigital, which claimed that Disney+ was using patented technology without permission for their high dynamic range video streaming. As a result, Disney+ was ordered to stop using this disputed technology, impacting the availability of Dolby Vision.
The issue has expanded beyond Germany, with users in France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Poland, and Nordic countries voicing similar complaints. Dutch site Tweakers and Flatpanels forums have confirmed the problem, with Disney acknowledging the issue. The company mentioned that they are working on a solution and that 4K UHD and HDR playback are still available on supported devices, even though Dolby Vision might be temporarily unavailable in some European countries.
Aside from Dolby Vision, Disney+ has also removed references to this format from its support pages in Europe, and 3D movies have disappeared in some countries. These changes have led users to wonder about the implications for their viewing experience, as high dynamic range formats play a crucial role in delivering optimal picture quality. Without dynamic HDR formats like Dolby Vision, content might lose some visual details when displayed on consumer screens.
The situation, for now, seems contained to Europe, as Disney+ users in the US can still access Dolby Vision on selected titles. However, it’s uncertain if this could change in the future or if the restrictions might extend more broadly. While Disney is working on resolving the issue, it might take time if it’s tied to an ongoing patent dispute. In the meantime, European subscribers can still enjoy 4K streams, even if they are missing advanced HDR formats that are typically associated with a premium viewing experience.
