Prime Video Streams Joaquin Phoenix’s Comic Book Movie Sequel
a record-breaking extent, the sequel was unfortunately not met with the same level of success.
Directed by Todd Phillips, “Joker: Folie a Deux” follows Arthur Fleck (played by Joaquin Phoenix) as he navigates life in Arkham after his crimes as Joker. The character encounters Harley Quinn (played by Lady Gaga), leading to a series of chaotic events.
The original “Joker” was a surprising hit, given its relatively low budget of $60 million. It became a cultural phenomenon, earning Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar for Best Actor and sparking conversations among viewers and critics alike. Naturally, a sequel was in the works, with Warner Bros. granting creative control to Phillips and Phoenix for the follow-up.
Despite high hopes, “Joker: Folie a Deux” failed to resonate with audiences. Critics and viewers panned the film, resulting in a dismal 31% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie struggled at the box office, earning just $207.5 million worldwide, a fraction of its predecessor’s earnings. Warner Bros. was reportedly facing significant losses due to the film’s poor performance.
Despite its shortcomings, the sequel remains a point of interest for many, with its disastrous outcome still sparking conversations within the industry. Fortunately, DC Studios has seen success with recent projects like “Superman,” “Peacemaker” season 2, and “Creature Commandos.” Looking forward, “Supergirl” is set to debut next summer, offering hope for the future of DC.
For those curious to see the sequel for themselves, “Joker: Folie a Deux” is available on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD from Amazon.
