Hulu orders high school drama pilot “Young Americans” from Chris Hutton and Eddie O’Keefe

Hulu has just announced a new drama pilot called Young Americans, and it sounds like it’s going to be a hit! The show is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet story set against the backdrop of Washington D.C. politics. If that doesn’t hook you, I don’t know what will!

The plot follows the children of the elite as they navigate high school drama at Capitol Crest Academy. As they deal with their own scandals and ambitions, a forbidden romance between two students from rival political families adds even more tension to the mix. Sounds juicy, right?

The pilot is written and executive produced by Chris Hutton and Eddie O’Keefe, known for their work on When the Streetlights Go On. And with Bruce Miller, the genius behind The Handmaid’s Tale, in the mix as an executive producer, we can expect some serious drama and intrigue.

This isn’t Hulu’s first foray into the young adult space. They recently passed on a few YA pilot projects, but they did pick up the comedy-mystery pilot Phony in 2024, and Mindy Kaling’s comedy series Not Suitable for Work is another success story waiting for renewal news.

Hulu seems to be doubling down on pilots, with Young Americans joining other projects like Chicks, Durango, and Lex. It’s a refreshing return to the traditional pilot model in a sea of straight-to-series orders, and we’re excited to see how it all plays out.

It’s clear that Young Americans has a talented team behind it, and with a premise like that, it’s definitely one to keep an eye on. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new show!
