Keanu Reeves backs director Carl Rinsch amid Netflix scandal
Carl Rinsch, a director known for his work on the film “47 Ronin,” is facing the repercussions of a recent legal battle. Rinsch was convicted of scamming $11 million from Netflix and is now looking at a possible prison sentence of over 10 years. The charges against him include money laundering, illegal transactions, and wire fraud.
Prosecutors revealed that Rinsch received $44 million from Netflix to work on a sci-fi series called “White Horse,” but the project never came to fruition. Instead, he splurged the money on luxury items like a Ferrari and multiple Rolls-Royces, as well as watches, clothing, furniture, and antiques. Rinsch also transferred some of the funds into cryptocurrency and personal accounts.
In a letter addressed to U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff, Keanu Reeves, who worked with Rinsch on “47 Ronin,” expressed his support for the director. Reeves attested to Rinsch’s talent and the positive impact he has had on those around him, despite the current situation. Reeves urged the judge to consider showing leniency towards Rinsch, emphasizing the healing power of forgiveness alongside the necessary consequences.
Rinsch is expected to pay $11 million in restitution to Netflix and an additional $4.4 million in attorneys’ fees. His sentencing is scheduled for June 29, where he could face up to 121 months behind bars. It remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will unfold for Rinsch and what the future holds for the embattled director.
