Netflix Acquires Anime Adaptation of ‘Fool Night,’ a Classic Dystopian Manga

Last week, fans of anime got a treat when studios Sunrise and Shaft announced their first-ever collaboration on a new project. After some teasing, it was confirmed that they were working on bringing Kasumi Yasuda’s Fool Night manga to life in an anime adaptation. This exciting news was unveiled during Netflix’s presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market. The anime is scheduled to release in 2026.

Fool Night is set in a dark future where sunlight hasn’t touched the Earth for a century. As plant life struggles and oxygen levels plummet, scientists introduce transfloration, a process that transforms humans into plants. Atsuyuki Yukawa, known for his work on Suzume, will be directing the anime.

In celebration of the announcement, exclusive images were shared by Variety, the official X account shared key visuals, and Bandai Namco Filmworks released a teaser trailer on YouTube. The official description of Fool Night reveals the desperate scenario where humanity turns to transfloration to survive in a world shrouded in darkness and winter.

The story follows Toshiro Kamiya, a young man facing poverty and trying to support his mentally ill mother. In a bleak reality that offers him only hardship, he finds himself contemplating a life-changing decision. Should he continue living as a human, or take the path of becoming a plant? His choice sets the stage for a deep dive into the complexities of existence.

Stay tuned for the release of Fool Night on Netflix in 2026 for a dystopian adventure that promises to captivate anime enthusiasts. And if you’re hungry for more news, be sure to check out what’s in store for Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek, the DC Universe, and Doctor Who in the coming years.
