NASCAR Cup Series Qualifying Report: San Diego 2022
Drivers in the NASCAR Cup Series got their first taste of a brand-new raceway during practice on Friday. The San Diego Street Course, situated at the Naval Base Coronado, made its debut for the Anduril 250 event. This marks a groundbreaking moment for NASCAR, as it is the first time the series has held a race on an active United States military base.
At 3.4 miles long, the San Diego Street Course is one of the lengthiest tracks in NASCAR history. Featuring 16 turns, the track winds its way through the Naval Base Coronado, offering a mix of high-speed stretches and intricate corners that leave little room for error. Some key spots on the track include Carrier Corner, a challenging turn flanked by aircraft carriers, the Coronado Chicane filled with technical curves, and Runway Road that runs alongside an active runway on Halsey Field.
As 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy, the Anduril 250 event in San Diego provides a fitting backdrop to celebrate this momentous occasion on the NASCAR calendar.
Team Penske is no stranger to success in inaugural events, having clinched 37 victories across various motorsports programs. Their history of victory in inaugural races stretches back to their early days, with notable wins at the Daytona 24 Hours in 1966, Can-Am, and IndyCar races. In NASCAR, Team Penske has conquered nine inaugural events, including six in the Cup Series alone. Since 2018, they have claimed victory in four first-time Cup Series races, with drivers like Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano leading the charge.
The action is set to heat up on Sunday at Naval Base Coronado, with the Anduril 250 race kicking off just after 4 p.m. ET. Fans can catch all the action on Prime Video, MRN Radio, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Stay tuned for an adrenaline-pumping race on this historic track!
