Disney+ Expands Content Beyond Children’s Shows
Disney+ has come a long way from being labeled as just a kids’ streaming service. Thanks to the addition of general entertainment content from Hulu, more adults are tuning in than ever before. According to Karl Holmes, who oversees Disney+ in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, a significant 40% of viewing hours on Disney+ are now attributed to 16-34 year-olds. That’s ahead of other big players like Netflix, Prime Video, and Paramount+.
Holmes emphasized that Disney+ now caters to adults just as much as it does to children. The streaming service has been heavily promoting shows for mature audiences, such as “The Kardashians,” “Shogun,” and the popular British series, “Rivals.” In fact, “Rivals” has been a massive hit, with the second season already surpassing the first in terms of viewership.
While Disney+ continues to invest in major films and shows in the US, they’re also focusing on international markets like Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Holmes mentioned that Disney is ramping up its investment in local content to keep subscribers engaged with familiar stories from their regions.
Despite the perception that Disney+ is mainly for preschoolers, the reality is quite different. Disney has been working hard to showcase its wide range of offerings, with marketing campaigns highlighting new titles that resonate with the core audience of 16-34 year-olds. Disney is even leveraging brands like ESPN and Hulu to attract a broader audience.
However, Disney+ faces challenges in gaining popularity among teenagers who prefer social media content over traditional streaming services. To address this, Disney is banking on original content and expanding its portfolio beyond iconic franchises like Marvel and Star Wars.
In terms of local originals, Disney has recognized the need to create region-specific shows to meet the demands of diverse audiences. This shift has been partly driven by regulatory changes in various countries, mandating international streamers like Disney+ to invest more in local content.
So, if you still think Disney+ is just for kids, you might want to give it another look. The streaming service has evolved into a platform that caters to a wide range of demographics and preferences. Stay tuned for more exciting updates and let us know your thoughts on social media!
