Guillermo Del Toro Praises Best Streaming Series

Guillermo Del Toro recently shared his admiration for the new Apple TV+ horror comedy series called Widow’s Bay. In this 10-episode show, Matthew Rhys stars as a small-town mayor trying to revitalize his island, believed to be cursed by locals. Other actors in the series include Dale Dickey, Kevin Carroll, Stephen Root, Kate O’Flynn, and Kingston Rumi Southwick.

Del Toro took to X to express his enthusiasm, calling Widow’s Bay “the best streaming series in a long time” and praising its storytelling as a mesmerizing act of horror. The term ‘prestidigitation’ that he used refers to the art of close-up magic or sleight of hand.

The show also received acclaim from various reviewers, earning a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes after its debut. Reviewers highlighted Rhys’s stellar physical comedy performance and the difficulty in defining Widow’s Bay within a specific genre, instead labeling it as unique.

Louise Griffin from RadioTimes recognized the show’s success in balancing comedy and horror correctly, attributing it to being a distinctive and off-beat addition to the genre. The show’s twists, reveals, and surreal moments were particularly lauded in Griffin’s four-star review.

Angie Han from The Hollywood Reporter also praised Widow’s Bay for its intriguing blend of creepy and cozy elements, noting Rhys’s strong performance. However, the series was critiqued for occasionally struggling to convert tension into catharsis effectively.

You can catch the first seven episodes of Widow’s Bay on Apple TV+ now, with new episodes airing every Wednesday until June 17. Join the conversation and share your thoughts on this exciting new series!
