Texas Attorney General Files Lawsuit Against Netflix for Unauthorized User Data Collection

Enjoying your Netflix binge? Well, you might want to know that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against the streaming giant. Apparently, Paxton claims that Netflix has been collecting user data without the proper consent, even from children’s accounts – yikes! The lawsuit alleges that Netflix is pulling in “billions of dollars every year from secretly selling consumer data” to other companies. Not cool, right?

In a press release, Paxton stated, “Netflix has built a surveillance program designed to illegally collect and profit from Texans’ personal data without their consent, and my office will do everything in our power to stop it.” Strong words, Ken!

But wait, there’s more! The lawsuit also takes aim at Netflix’s autoplay feature, claiming that it’s intended to keep viewers, kids included, glued to the screen for longer periods. The suit hopes to see autoplay turned off by default on children’s profiles and an end to Netflix’s alleged collection and distribution of user data.

Netflix doesn’t think much of the lawsuit, though. In a statement, a company spokesperson said they believe the lawsuit “lacks merit and is based on inaccurate and distorted information.” They assured that they take privacy seriously and follow all privacy laws in the places they operate.
