How Price Increases Benefit Streaming Platforms like Disney+

Disney saw a boost in their stock on Wall Street after announcing higher-than-expected earnings for the quarter. This was the first financial report since new CEO Josh D’Amaro took the reins. One of the standout performers was their streaming services, which now bring in more revenue than traditional TV for the entertainment division. Disney+ and Hulu saw an impressive 90% increase in revenue over the past year.

As streaming services continue to grow, many platforms, including Netflix, have been raising their prices. In fact, Netflix recently announced its second price increase in just over a year. Despite some grumbles from consumers, the streaming industry is proving to be quite profitable.

Jonathan Barnes, a sports enthusiast from New Orleans, used to subscribe to seven or eight streaming services at once. However, he’s had to reevaluate his subscriptions in light of increasing costs. Barnes emphasized the necessity of Disney+ for his household, alongside his subscriptions to YouTube TV and Hulu.

According to Ross Benes, a senior analyst at eMarketer, the days of heavily discounted streaming options are over. Streaming services are now a revenue-generating endeavor for media companies, filling the gap left by the decline of traditional TV viewership. Consumers are adapting to this reality, with households subscribing to an average of six services and increasing their monthly spending on entertainment.

Michael Goodman, director of entertainment research at Parks Associates, noted that bundling services has become a popular strategy for consumers to maximize their entertainment budget. This allows them to access multiple platforms without paying full price for each individually. Jon Giegengack, principal at Hub Entertainment Research, added that consumers are increasingly opting for lower-priced plans with ads to find better value.

Despite rising prices and the inclusion of ads, consumers seem to be more accepting of these changes. Whether it’s finding cost-effective ways to access their favorite content or simply resigning themselves to the new normal of streaming, viewers are adapting to the evolving landscape of digital entertainment.
