Warner Bros Paramount deal approved, pressure grows for Netflix
Warner Bros and Paramount have finally sealed the deal, which is putting some serious pressure on Netflix. But the real drama is happening over at Peacock, with subscriber losses that are unmatched by any other major streaming service. They’re hemorrhaging subscribers at a rate of 9% per month this year, according to Antenna.
Despite racking up over $11 billion in losses over the past six years, Peacock has managed to bring in 46 million subscribers thanks to big-ticket events like the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics. But here’s the catch – they can’t seem to hold onto them. Their cancellation rate is the highest among all the major streaming platforms, and even their partnership with Amazon isn’t helping.
All this churn and instability is costing Comcast big bucks, as they scramble to win back the same customers they already had. And with Brian Roberts missing out on potential partnerships with Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount+, things aren’t looking too rosy for Peacock. His stock is down, and the clock is ticking on negotiating a new streaming deal.
But it’s not all doom and gloom for Comcast. Their theme parks are thriving, their studio portfolio is strong, and internet business is booming. Plus, with Taylor Sheridan of “Yellowstone” fame bringing his content to Peacock in the next couple of years, there might be hope on the horizon. And let’s not forget about the new hire, Jez Butterworth, who could help steady the ship in the meantime.
However, with Comcast having already parted ways with Hulu and the streaming landscape rapidly evolving post-mergers, the options for new partnerships are dwindling. The question now is whether or not patience will pay off for Peacock, or if Comcast needs to act fast to secure its streaming future.
