Netflix’s Growth Strategy: Taking on TikTok and Instagram Reels
Netflix is cooking up a new plan to keep investors engaged after its recent stumbles. According to JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth, the streaming giant is gearing up to launch a “vertical video feed” on mobile later this month. This innovative approach aims to grab the attention of users on different screens beyond the traditional TV setup, offering quick, bite-sized content that could lead to increased interaction with Netflix’s longer shows and movies.
So, what can we expect from this new feature? Anmuth predicts that the vertical video platform will showcase snippets from Netflix’s original content, as well as newer offerings like video podcasts. And that’s not all – the platform is also set to feature content from popular creators such as Ms. Rachel and Mark Rober, similar to what we see on YouTube Shorts and Facebook Reels.
Anmuth believes that this strategy will not only help users discover a wider range of content but also enhance personalization and social engagement through Netflix’s unique scene-clipping feature called Moments. This move comes on the heels of Netflix falling short on its earnings for the first quarter of the year, leaving investors a bit frustrated. While the company missed the mark on raising its revenue guidance and operating margin, the departure of longtime chairman Reed Hastings has added to the uncertainty surrounding Netflix’s future.
Despite these challenges, Netflix is forging ahead with its plan to enter the vertical video space, a market currently dominated by big players like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. While it may take some time to see how this move pans out, we’re looking forward to discovering these new vertical videos as we browse through Netflix on a Friday night in search of an ’80s classic.
