Reed Hastings Departs Netflix After Nearly 30 Years

After almost three decades at the helm of Netflix, Reed Hastings is preparing to say goodbye. He announced that he will be stepping down from the board in June, marking the end of a long and successful tenure with the company he helped create and grow from a DVD-by-mail service to the streaming giant we know today. In a letter to shareholders, Hastings mentioned that he will be shifting his focus to philanthropic efforts and other projects.

Since 2023, Hastings has been the chairman of Netflix’s board, taking on the role after stepping down as co-CEO and appointing Greg Peters as his successor. Reflecting on his time with Netflix, Hastings shared, “Netflix changed my life in so many ways, and my all-time favorite memory was January 2016, when we enabled nearly the entire planet to enjoy our service.” He emphasized that his impact at Netflix wasn’t tied to a single decision but rather to fostering member satisfaction, nurturing a culture that could be passed down and improved, and laying the foundation for a company that can be loved by members and remain successful for years to come.
