Netflix Co-Founder Departs as Streaming Giant Seeks Growth

Netflix Chairman Reed Hastings, the co-founder of the streaming service almost 30 years ago, is stepping down. This big change comes at a tricky time for Netflix as it looks for new ways to grow, facing competition and dealing with the fallout of a failed $72 billion merger with Warner Bros Discovery earlier this year.

On Thursday, Netflix predicted lower earnings per share for the current quarter than analysts were expecting, with slower quarterly revenue growth than in the past year. This news caused the company’s stock to drop about 9% following the announcement of Hasting’s departure.

In a letter to investors, Netflix shared that Hastings will not seek re-election at the annual meeting in June. Instead, he plans to focus on philanthropy and other interests. The company reinforced its commitment to its current strategy of providing a wide range of movies and series for diverse audiences around the world. The outlook for the full year remained the same.

Greg Peters, the co-chief executive, highlighted Netflix’s impressive milestone of having over 325 million paid members at the end of last year and reaching almost a billion viewers globally. Despite this success, there is still room for growth according to Peters.

Hastings played a pivotal role in transforming Netflix from a DVD rental service to a global leader in streaming entertainment, changing the way we watch shows and movies. He navigated the company through the challenges of the pandemic, which saw incredible growth for Netflix while other entertainment companies struggled.
