HBO Max Surpasses 1.5 Million Subscribers in UK within 5 Days
HBO Max has hit the ground running in the UK, with 1.5 million subscribers signing up in the first five days, according to estimates from Ampere Analysis. This impressive start makes it the fastest streaming service to reach the 1 million mark in the market. Ampere predicts that HBO Max is on track to hit 6 million UK subscribers by the end of 2026, which would make it the 4th largest streaming service in the country.
One key factor in HBO Max’s success has been its partnership with Sky, with 77% of activations coming from existing Sky or NOW households. While Sky no longer has exclusivity over HBO programming, their long-term contracts and bundling strategy have helped limit subscriber churn. This means that new HBO Max subscribers are often adding the service to their existing lineup of streaming platforms, rather than replacing them.
Interestingly, the data shows that most new HBO Max customers also subscribe to Paramount+, Netflix, Discovery+, Disney+, and Sky Sports. Switching between services has been relatively minimal, with most switching activity coming from rival streamers rather than Sky or NOW. This indicates that the growth in HBO Max subscribers is driven by incremental take-up rather than substitution.
With the availability of TNT Sports content on HBO Max, including major football fixtures in early April, further subscriber growth is expected in the coming weeks. Overall, the strong demand for HBO Max and Sky’s effective distribution strategy are proving to be a winning combination in the competitive streaming market.
