Star Wars Maul: Shadow Lord Review

Star Wars fans, if you haven’t checked out Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord yet, you’re missing out! This new show follows Maul, one year after the final Clone Wars season and the events of Revenge of the Sith. Maul is focused on rebuilding his stranglehold on the galaxy’s underworld and seeking revenge on Emperor Palpatine. The setting on the mid-rim world of Janix adds an exciting crime show element to the Star Wars universe.

Captain Brander Lawson, voiced by Wagner Moura, is another compelling character in the series. A local Police Captain, Lawson navigates his relationship with the Empire while raising his teenage son as a single dad. His police droid, Two Boots, voiced by Richard Ayoade, adds a new dimension to the story. With Two Boots wanting to follow procedures and Lawson preferring his own methods, the duo’s dynamic makes for an engaging watch.

But it wouldn’t be Star Wars without lightsaber users, right? Enter Master Eeko-Dio-Daki, voiced by Dennis Haysbert, and his Padawan, Devon Izara, voiced by Gideon Adlon. These two Jedi on the run post Order 66 bring an emotional depth to the series, especially as Devon grapples with her new reality. Maul’s desire to make her his apprentice creates tension within his crew, especially with loyal member Rook Kast, voiced by Vanessa Marshall.

The show doesn’t romanticize Maul’s character but adds layers to his motivations and backstory. It explores his manipulation by Sidious/Palpatine and the losses he’s endured, leading to his path of revenge. Every scene with Maul is deliberate, showcasing his inner turmoil and desire for retribution. It’s a gripping and immersive look into a character we thought we knew, but perhaps didn’t understand completely.
