Netflix ordered to reimburse Italian subscribers for streaming service issues

Consumer group Movimento Consumatori recently announced that an Italian court has upheld its lawsuit against Netflix Italia as reported by Reuters. The lawsuit focused on what were considered unfair clauses that allowed for subscription price increases from 2017 to January 2024. The ruling determined that these clauses were unfair and violated the national Consumer Code by permitting changes to be made without providing a valid reason in the contract.

According to the ruling, each subscriber is entitled to a reduction in their current subscription price, reimbursement of any sums unduly paid, and potential compensation. These findings are significant as Netflix reportedly had 5.4 million Italian subscribers in 2025, and those on the Premium Plan subscription since 2017 could receive refunds of up to 500 euros each.

In response to the court’s decision, Netflix expressed its intention to appeal: “We take consumer rights very seriously and believe our terms have always complied with Italian laws and practice.” As part of the ruling, the decision must be published on Netflix Italia’s website and in leading national newspapers to inform consumers of the outcome.
