HBO Addresses Potential Doctor Who Partnership with BBC

HBO boss Casey Bloys recently addressed rumors linking the network to Doctor Who after the BBC’s deal with Disney+ came to a close. The collaboration between Disney+ and the BBC began with the 2023 60th-anniversary specials of Doctor Who, followed by two additional seasons of the beloved sci-fi series and a spin-off titled The War Between the Land and the Sea.

Although the deal with Disney+ was not extended beyond October 2025, Lindsay Salt, the BBC’s director of drama commissioning, reassured fans that the corporation remains fully committed to Doctor Who. In fact, a Christmas special from showrunner Russell T Davies is already in the works for 2026.

As speculation arose about a potential partnership with HBO Max for streaming Doctor Who, Salt acknowledged the possibility, noting that HBO has been great creative partners in the past. When questioned about the prospect, Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, expressed openness to the idea, emphasizing that while it hasn’t been presented to them yet, he wouldn’t rule it out entirely.

The last season of Doctor Who ended on an unexpected note, with the Doctor beginning to regenerate, only to reveal a surprising returning face: Billie Piper. This twist left fans buzzing with anticipation for what comes next.

In December, writer/producer Davies shared plot details for the upcoming Christmas special with BBC executives, leaving them impressed and excited. With the launch of HBO Max in the UK and Ireland on March 26th, fans can catch up on Doctor Who on BBC iPlayer while staying tuned for any potential streaming developments.
