Debunking the Myth of Superhero Fatigue
Superhero content has been a staple of pop culture, thanks in large part to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) bringing lesser-known characters to the forefront. However, in recent years, we’ve seen a decline in superhero content at the box office and on streaming platforms like Disney+. Some may say it’s superhero fatigue, but I believe the issue lies more in the quality of the content rather than the genre itself, leaving audiences with skepticism toward both Marvel and DC.
The MCU’s Infinity Saga is hailed as one of the greatest serialized stories in film history. Spanning 23 movies from “Iron Man” in 2008 to “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019, this epic tale grossed a whopping $2.7 billion and became the second highest grossing PG-13 movie worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. But lately, Marvel hasn’t been hitting those billion-dollar marks like before. So, what changed?
As the Infinity Saga wrapped up, Disney’s superhero offerings began to shift. The quality of the content being produced seemed to fluctuate, leading to a decline in audience interest in “Marvel” and “DC” properties. This quality issue could be a key reason why superhero movies are no longer dominating the box office like they used to.
