Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Chloé Zhao Discuss…
Over the weekend, it was revealed that Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. The reboot, which was set to focus on Ryan Kiera Armstrong, the daughter of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy Summers, has been scrapped after the pilot was shot but won’t be released.
There’s some buzz that Buffy only appeared in the final moments of the pilot, indicating that perhaps the new young cast struggled to capture the magic of the original series. Chloe Zhao, known for Eternals and Hamnet, directed the pilot and mentioned on the Oscars red carpet that she wasn’t surprised by Hulu’s decision.
Despite the setback, multiple outlets suggest that Hulu still has a lot of love for the Buffy franchise and may consider future iterations of the IP. However, it seems that this particular version won’t be reworked. This means that Armstrong, known for her work in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, won’t get to see her character, Nova, come to life on screen.
Armstrong took to Instagram to thank fans for their support and express her pride in the work done on New Sunnydale. She acknowledged the disappointment of not being able to share the show with viewers but remains optimistic about future possibilities for the Buffy universe.
Although details about the pilot are mixed, with reports of resurrected vampires and a limited appearance by Gellar’s character, it’s clear that the project won’t be moving forward as planned. While this is disappointing news, the future of Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains uncertain and full of possibilities.
