Streaming vs. Cable: Is there a similarity in Sports Business?
nformed sports fan by keeping up with the latest trends in streaming entertainment. Last year, it seemed like cutting the cord from cable was the way to go, but the world of sports media is always evolving. The NBA struck a deal with Amazon, NBC, and ESPN, MLS games are now available to Apple TV+ subscribers, and the NFL is everywhere you look.
Despite the convenience streaming offers, fans are starting to feel like they’re juggling too many apps to keep up with their favorite teams. Surprisingly, only a quarter of sports fans rely on just one streaming service to watch live games. Many fans use multiple apps like Prime Video, HBO Max, ESPN’s platform, Peacock, and Paramount+ to catch all the action.
When it comes to cost, opinions are divided. Roughly one-third of sports fans are satisfied with what they pay for streaming, but an equal number are dissatisfied. For sports streamers specifically, nearly half are satisfied with the cost, indicating they see the value in streaming more consistently.
Interestingly, more fans now believe that streaming is about as pricey as cable. This shift in perception shows that fans are considering factors beyond just subscription prices, such as the number of apps needed and service fees.
When it comes to where fans want to watch their favorite team’s games, streaming barely edges out cable. Convenience seems to be the deciding factor, with a significant number of fans expressing no platform preference.
As we look ahead, fans are no longer considering if they can leave cable for streaming; instead, they’re evaluating if streaming provides the ease and predictability they were hoping for. The key to the future of sports media lies in making the viewing experience simple and straightforward for fans. Predictability, not perfection, is what fans are looking for as they navigate the ever-changing world of streaming sports content.
