One Piece Creator Explains Changes to Netflix’s Live-Action Chopper

The creator of One Piece shared some insights into the new season of Netflix’s live-action series, explaining the development process behind Tony Tony Chopper’s design for the show. Eiichiro Oda revealed that Chopper’s design underwent significant changes before arriving at the final version we see on screen. Fans were initially worried about how the beloved talking reindeer would translate to live-action when it was announced that he would be fully introduced to the Straw Hat crew in the second season.

Oda admitted that he, too, had concerns during production about Chopper’s design. In a podcast released by Netflix after the debut of the second season, Oda explained that the original approach to Chopper’s design was more realistic. However, he suggested that the team think of Chopper as a stuffed toy to avoid the uncanny valley effect that could come from making him too lifelike.

The discussion around Chopper’s voice was equally important, as Oda emphasized the need for a unique cuteness that is more Japanese than Hollywood in nature. This balance between a realistic design and maintaining the character’s mascot appeal was crucial to the success of the live-action adaptation of One Piece.

Chopper’s portrayal sets the tone for future seasons, with even wilder animal characters to be introduced. Season 3 is currently in production, and fans can feel reassured that the excellent execution of Chopper’s design bodes well for the series’ handling of other fantastical elements.
