Hulu Pauses ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Revival Plans
Hulu has officially put the brakes on a potential revival of the beloved supernatural series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” This decision was shared with fans on March 14th through a video from Sarah Michelle Gellar, who originally starred as Buffy in the series.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” first aired from 1997 to 2003, featuring Gellar as a powerful teenage vampire slayer. The concept was created by Joss Whedon and was initially introduced in a 1992 movie that starred Kristy Swanson.
The streaming giant had greenlit a pilot for the new show, titled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale,” and production took place in August 2025. The show was set to follow a new slayer, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who would be mentored by Gellar’s Buffy. Acclaimed filmmaker Chloé Zhao was set to direct the pilot, and Gellar was on board as an executive producer. The project was first announced in February 2025.
Even though Hulu had the option to rework the pilot, they ultimately decided to halt the project. However, there is a possibility that the series could be revived in a different format sometime in the future.
In a touching message on Instagram, Gellar wrote, “If the apocalypse comes … you can still beep me.”
