Substack debuts new recording studio feature
Substack recently rolled out a new feature called the Substack Recording Studio, designed to make it easier for creators to pre-record and publish videos directly on the platform. This feature, which is currently only available on desktop, allows creators to produce solo videos or have conversations with up to two guests. Additionally, creators can personalize their videos with custom watermarks and share their screens with co-hosts. After recording, Substack automatically generates clips and thumbnails for easy sharing.
According to a recent blog post from Substack, creators who have utilized audio or video content on the platform in the last 90 days have experienced a 50% faster revenue growth compared to those who haven’t. While Substack is primarily known for its newsletter platform, the company has been steadily expanding its video capabilities in recent years. This move positions it more as a competitor to platforms like Patreon, encouraging creators to explore multimedia content.
Since 2022, Substack has allowed creators to upload videos, and more recent updates have enabled creators to livestream and monetize their video content. In addition to the Substack Recording Studio, Substack also introduced a Creator Accelerator Fund of $20 million to help creators transition from other platforms to Substack. The platform even launched a TV app, making it possible for viewers to watch video posts and livestreams on their television screens. The app includes a “For You” feature, offering personalized recommendations similar to TikTok.
While short-form videos are often watched on phones, there is a growing trend of viewers turning to TV screens for longer-form content. Netflix and YouTube have both made significant investments in bringing video podcasts to TV audiences, reflecting the shift towards consuming content on larger screens. Substack’s latest updates and launches indicate a strategic focus on engaging with video content and providing creators with versatile tools for reaching their audiences.
