Amazon Prime Video Price Increase: No Ads at Higher Cost

If you’re someone who loves streaming your favorite TV shows and movies without annoying commercial breaks, you’re not alone. It used to be one of the major perks of video streaming services. But as time goes on, that luxury often comes at a higher price, and that price keeps creeping up.

Amazon just announced that they’re upping the cost of their ad-free Prime Video plan, now called Prime Video Ultra, starting April 10. The new monthly cost will be $4.99, up from the previous $2.99. Prime Video is bundled with Amazon’s Prime membership, which costs $14.99 a month or $139 annually. But fear not, folks on the yearly plan can snag Ultra for $45.99 per year. If you prefer just Prime Video, there’s a standalone subscription for $8.99 per month too.

Now, let’s talk perks! Subscribers to Ultra will not only enjoy ad-free streaming but also get cool new features. You’ll be able to download 100 videos for offline viewing, up from 50, and stream on five devices at once, up from three. Plus, you’ll have exclusive access to Dolby Atmos and UHD/4K streaming. And if you’re sticking with the traditional plan, don’t worry, you’re also in for a treat! You’ll soon be able to download 50 videos per month, up from 25, and stream on four devices at once, up from three.

Amazon clarified that offering ad-free streaming with premium features requires additional investment, and this new pricing structure is in line with other major streaming services. Plus, it gives customers the freedom to choose how they consume content.

Prime Video is known for its original series like The Boys, Fallout, and Invincible, with a live-action adaptation of God of War coming soon. Interestingly, Amazon was one of the last major streaming platforms to introduce ads in 2024, as the industry shifted towards using ads as a revenue stream rather than solely relying on subscriber growth. That’s why going ad-free now comes at an extra cost, while more budget-friendly plans are kept afloat by advertisers.

And Amazon isn’t alone in raising prices. Other streaming services like Paramount Plus, Disney Plus, Peacock, Netflix, and Apple TV+ have all bumped up their rates this year. It seems like a trend that sweeps across the industry every so often, so keep an eye out for any changes with your favorite services!
