Japan’s Concerns over Netflix Exclusivity and World Baseball Classic Appeal
In Japan, there are growing concerns about the way the World Baseball Classic is being broadcast. With Netflix holding exclusive rights to air the games in Japan, many fans worry that the tournament’s popularity will decline as a result.
Japanese fans are accustomed to watching their national team play on free national channels, which has always been a hit. Nearly 100 million out of 125 million people in Japan tuned in to watch the WBC in 2023 when it was broadcast on national outlets.
MLB, as the organizers of the tournament, decided to partner with Netflix for the broadcast in Japan. This move raised red flags since subscription services are not mainstream for sports in Japan. Many fear that Japanese fans may not be willing to pay to watch their national team play, thus decreasing interest in the tournament.
Nobby Ito, an executive advisor for the Nippon Professional Baseball Commissioner, expressed his concerns about this decision. He emphasized that the lack of terrestrial coverage might limit the overall excitement around the WBC in the country, affecting its mass appeal.
Although there is no public viewership data available yet, the worries about Netflix’s exclusivity in Japan are shared by many. Subscription services like Netflix are not as prevalent in Japan as they are in the United States. With around 10 million Netflix subscribers in Japan out of a population of over 125 million, the shift to a paid platform might deter some fans.
While MLB believes that partnering with Netflix will help expand the game, some individuals like Taro Abe, a veteran Japanese journalist, argue that the cultural shift to paid TV might hinder viewership. He highlighted that many people, especially older generations, are not accustomed to subscription services in Japan.
To address concerns about limited access, Netflix has started broadcasting the WBC games in various public locations in Japan. The company clarified that businesses airing the games using personal accounts will not face any repercussions, even though commercial use goes against Netflix’s terms of service.
Even though Netflix is optimistic about the audience engagement with the WBC so far, some fans remain critical of the partnership with MLB. Concerns persist about how successful this move will be in expanding the viewership of the tournament in Japan.
For now, the future of the World Baseball Classic’s viewership in Japan remains uncertain as fans and industry experts debate the impact of Netflix’s exclusive rights to broadcast the games.
