Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua’s Epic Hannibal Film to Film in Italy
Netflix is ramping up for an epic historical film featuring Denzel Washington as Carthaginian general Hannibal, directed by Antoine Fuqua. The film, written by John Logan, a three-time Academy Award winner known for his work on films like “The Aviator” and “Gladiator,” will start shooting this summer in Italy. The production will be based at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, with pre-production and location scouting currently underway in Italy for this lavish historical epic.
The cinematographer for the film will be Robert Richard, another triple Oscar winner with credits on films like “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “JFK.” The movie is set to tell the story of Hannibal, a real-life warrior recognized as one of the greatest military commanders ever. It will detail his crucial battles against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War, including his iconic invasion of Italy while riding a war elephant from Northern Africa. Hannibal’s leadership led to significant victories for the Carthaginians against the Romans, resulting in the occupation of much of southern Italy.
