Ariana DeBose and Bobby Cannavale discuss adapting ‘Scarpetta’ for the screen

Ariana DeBose and Bobby Cannavale are bringing Patricia Cornwell’s Scarpetta to life on screen, streaming exclusively on Prime Video. The series combines elements from Cornwell’s novels Postmortem and Autopsy, starring Nicole Kidman as Dr. Kay Scarpetta. This gripping show follows Scarpetta, a determined medical examiner, as she unravels a case from her past and delves into the complexities of forensic investigation.

Since the publication of Postmortem in 1990, there has been significant progress in how female leads are portrayed on television. According to DeBose, Cornwell would have been eager to see representation of Black women like Lucy Farinelli-Watson, a grief-stricken character with emotional depth. Lucy’s journey, dramatized through her interactions with A.I., sparks important conversations about societal practices.

In Scarpetta, we also witness the evolution of the character of Pete Marino, portrayed by Cannavale and his real-life son, Jake Cannavale. The dynamic between the two characters unfolds over time, exploring trust and their shared history. Cannavale emphasizes the importance of portraying the characters’ growth realistically, encouraging viewers to follow their journey.
