Season 8 of Drive to Survive to be Available on Apple TV in the U.S.
In a surprising twist, Apple TV and Netflix have teamed up for this Formula 1 season, kicking off with the premiere of “Drive to Survive” Season 8 on Friday. This behind-the-scenes documentary series will be available on Apple TV for viewers in the U.S. while still being accessible globally on Netflix, marking a first for the show. In return, Netflix will broadcast Apple TV’s coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix to U.S. audiences.
This collaboration is a significant moment for the sport as it continues to attract a growing fanbase. “Drive to Survive” played a key role in boosting F1’s popularity in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing viewers with a look at the human stories behind the sport and the behind-the-scenes moments of some of the most significant events from the previous year.
Previously, fans had to turn to other platforms to watch F1 races, with ESPN holding the U.S. broadcasting rights until their deal expired last year. Following the success of an F1 movie produced by Apple Studios, Apple secured the exclusive U.S. broadcasting rights, solidifying a deal worth between $120 million to $150 million per year. This move represents a shift in F1’s broadcasting approach, transitioning from traditional broadcast partners to a streaming powerhouse like Apple. F1’s leaders are optimistic that this shift will help grow the sport even further.
Apple TV will offer a comprehensive F1 viewing package this season, covering all track sessions. It is expected that F1’s presence will extend to other Apple products, as evidenced by features like the track outline, turn numbers, and F1 cars visible on Apple Maps’ view of Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit.
