Disney+’s ‘Battle of Fates’ Producers Apologize for Controversial Episode
Producers of Disney+ show “Battle of Fates” recently issued an apology after facing criticism for a controversial episode that featured a deceased firefighter. The reality program involves 49 “fate readers” participating in challenges related to shamanism, tarot, and physiognomy, exploring the concept of fate and its interpretation.
The episode in question sparked controversy when contestants were tasked with deducing the cause of death of a deceased individual. Senior Firefighter Kim Cheol-hong, who tragically lost his life while serving the public, was identified on the show, leading to concerns over the use of a fallen hero’s story for entertainment purposes and whether proper consent was obtained from the family.
In response, the production team expressed their deepest respect for Senior Firefighter Kim Cheol-hong and extended condolences to his family. They clarified that the decision to feature Kim’s story was aligned with the show’s theme of exploring fate and intended to reflect on meaningful and noble narratives.
Before filming, the team informed the family about the nature of the program, which involved fortune-telling practices like saju to examine the deceased’s fate. Written consent was obtained from a family member to use Kim’s details, and a moment of silence was observed at the filming site in his honor. However, some family members and acquaintances expressed concerns after the episode aired, indicating that they were not adequately informed beforehand.
The production team acknowledged these concerns and pledged to provide further explanations to address any misunderstandings. They emphasized their commitment to handling the situation sensitively and transparently moving forward.
