Court House Flag to Fly at Half-Staff for Former Judge Alfonso ‘Jess’ Gonzalez
The Lucas County Courthouse is honoring the memory of former judge Alfonso “Jess” Gonzales, who passed away suddenly while on vacation in Mexico. Judge Gonzales, known for his warm smile and professionalism, was appointed to the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas by Governor Mike DeWine in 2019 after serving in various roles within the legal community.
Friends and colleagues remember Judge Gonzales as a dedicated public servant who always had time to help others. Bernie Quilter, Lucas County Clerk of Courts, shared that Gonzales would often stop by his office to offer assistance and discuss courthouse procedures with a smile on his face.
Judge Michael Goulding, a former colleague, described Gonzales as hard-working and friendly, with a deep pride in his family. The entire court community is saddened by his sudden passing and will honor his memory by flying the courthouse flag at half-staff.
Beyond his professional contributions, Gonzales was remembered as a mentor and a friend by those who had the privilege of working with him. Washington Local Schools board member Brady Hall reflected on Gonzales’ impact, highlighting his perseverance and ability to navigate challenging situations with grace.
Details about funeral arrangements have not been announced yet, but the courthouse will be paying tribute to Judge Gonzales by displaying a flag at half-staff and suspending the evening illumination of the courthouse dome in his honor. The courthouse community and those who knew him are mourning the loss of a dedicated public servant and a kind-hearted individual.
