Mandalorian and Grogu: A Tribute to Memorable Super Bowl Commercials
Disney is bringing the Star Wars universe to Super Bowl Sunday with a new ad featuring The Mandalorian & Grogu. Rather than a trailer, this 30-second spot is a unique creation from Mando director Jon Favreau. The ad has a classic American commercial feel, complete with a gravelly-voiced narrator reminiscent of a truck or beer advertisement, but instead, we see Mandalorian and Grogu riding in a carriage drawn by Tauntauns.
Disney aims to tap into viewers’ nostalgic feelings for the breakout characters from the TV series ‘The Mandalorian,’ which premiered over six years ago on Disney+. The hope is that this cheeky and charming advertisement will remind fans of their love for these characters.
Jon Favreau took a live-action approach to shooting the spot, collaborating with the Lucasfilm creature team and puppeteers, as well as ILM. Pedro Pascal stars as Din Djarin, the protector of Grogu, a Force-sensitive being in need of guidance. The film features a star-studded cast, including Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White, and is set to hit theaters on May 22.
‘Mandalorian & Grogu’ marks the first Star Wars feature film to grace the big screen in nearly seven years, since ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ in 2019. This film release signals a new chapter for Lucasfilm, the studio that brought George Lucas’ vision to the world and was acquired by Disney in 2012.
